Worldwide Passport Club host: Mario Cesar de Camargo, past Rotary International President-elect

His Perspective: Addressing Rotary’s Challenge and Shaping Its Future

At the December 9th Zoom meeting of the Worldwide Passport Club, Mario Cesar de Camargo, former Rotary International President-elect, discussed his perspectives on Rotary’s challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing world, emphasizing the need for adaptation and forward-thinking.

Mario notes that with an average member age of 64, the organization risks “aging out” which may hinder its growth and ability to meet current needs. He expressed concern regarding the emergence of a bureaucratic culture which may impede progress and discourage leadership development. Mario 0bserves that Rotary is losing influence in communities and shifting away from its former position at the forefront of addressing both local and global challenges. Membership remains stagnant across North America and Canada, a signal that Rotary must rethink how it presents its mission, relevance, and value to the next generation. To secure its future, Mario stressed that attracting younger members is not optional - it is essential.

Mario cites that Rotary is full of untapped potential. He pointed to the transformative power of social media, where Rotary can tell its story with authenticity and reach audiences previously untouched. He has urged the organization to rethink its leadership continuity, suggesting that the traditional one-year presidential term limits long-term strategy and follow-through. Mario encourages Rotary to expand collaboration with Foundations, opening doors to new partnerships and funding streams. A revitalized Rotary, he argues, requires new energy, innovation, and autonomy, with Zones receiving greater flexibility as headquarters in Evanston eases regulatory constraints.

Mario Cesar de Camargo’s message can be understood as: Rotary’s future depends not on preserving tradition, but on embracing transformation with purpose.
